The new drives are claimed to reach random sustained 90,000 IOPS during read operations and 17,000 IOPS while writing data, with sequential sustained speeds of up to 510MB/sec read and 230MB/sec write throughput. The speeds are over three times as fast as Toshiba’s enterprise HDDs, while power consumption drops to just 6.5 watts during operation.

The MKx001GRZB drives will be available in 100GB, 200GB and 400GB capacities. Toshiba expects the drives to ship in the first quarter of 2011, although pricing has yet to be announced.

Another one bites the dust when it comes to making OLED HDTVs. Sony left the game in February (though not before showing a 3D OLED set that may eventually see the light of day), and now Reuters reports that Toshiba is junking its OLED television efforts.

Though OLED TVs promise black levels and color reproduction that rival those of plasmas, their high prices (Sony’s lone 11-inch version sold for $2,500) amid a severe recession placed them on the chopping block. In Toshiba’s case, the company is refitting its OLED production facility to meet the continuing high demand for LCD panels.

With Sony and Toshiba on the sidelines, OLED’s biggest cheerleader is LG, which has sold a 15-inch model in South Korea already, and recently showcased a 31-inch set that would cost some astronomical sum if it ever gets a commercial release. But will LG be able to go it alone in promoting this technology for the world’s living rooms, or will it get cold feet, too?

Toshiba Corp will start marketing by the year end a 3D television that people can watch without wearing special eyeglasses, the first such TV in the world, sources have said.

Although various major consumer electronics makers have released 3D TVs, including Panasonic Corp in April and Sony Corp in June, critics have complained about the bother of having to wear glasses.

In what is likely to be a world first, Toshiba Corp. is planning to release before the end of 2010 a TV set that will enable viewers to enjoy 3-D images with the naked eye, company sources have said.

Conventional 3-D TVs require viewers to wear special glasses when viewing 3-D content. Toshiba’s planned release of a set that will dispense with such glasses is likely to invigorate the market.

Toshiba plans to introduce three models, including one with a 21-inch screen, and will sell them for several hundred thousand yen, the sources said, adding the TVs’ release likely will coincide with the year-end shopping season.

Toshiba has developed an integral imaging system that emits rays of light at different angles, allowing viewers’ brains to recreate 3-D images without special glasses. The new technology also will enable viewers to enjoy 3-D content from numerous viewing positions, and the images will not strain the eyes, the sources said.

Usually, 3-D TVs project different images to viewers’ right and left eyes at high speeds, and the 3-D images are reconstructed in the brain. Using 3-D glasses, a viewer cannot see an image intended for the right eye with the left eye and vice versa. When doing so, stereoscopic images are seen.

According to the sources, Toshiba plans to use high-definition panels so that three-dimensional images–fast-moving images being one example–can be seen with the naked eye. All existing 3-D content, including high-resolution digital images, will be playable on the new TVs, the sources said.

During spring, Panasonic Corp. was the first electronics manufacturer to launch a 3-D TV, with many domestic companies following suit. Many consider 3-D TVs the workhorse of their 2010 lineup and have positioned the year as the beginning of the 3-D TV era. However, sales have remained stagnant, mainly because the TV sets require special glasses.
