Mess with Washington at your own peril, Hurricane Earl

Come on, Hurricane Earl, take your best shot.

Brush up against us; make high clouds over Washington. We don’t much like weather around these parts. And if you so much as send a band of tropical rain our way, we’ll go grocery shopping on you.

We mean business, Earl.

Ever heard of Storm Tracker, Live Super Doppler, MaxTrack and Doppler 2 Radar Loop? That’s how we know it’s weather. And we’ll be ready.

Ever heard of Pepco? Forget everything you heard, then. Especially what Maryland House Majority Leader Kumar P. Barve (D-Montgomery) said at a hearing Monday on the utility’s most recent screw-ups: “I have relatives in Mumbai who cannot believe how often we lose power.”

That is so unfair. Mumbai uses thermal, gas and hydro power to make electricity. Pepco uses what — hamsters on a treadmill?

And don’t pay attention to what Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) said, either: “Some similar issues were raised in 2003 after Hurricane Isabel. There were a number of recommendations then, some of which were enacted and some of which were not.”

Intel snags wireless unit of chip maker Infineon

Let’s hope that Intel doesn’t try to slap those impossible to remove “Intel Inside” stickers on smartphones following the chip maker’s $1.4 billion deal, announced this morning, to buy Infineon Technologies’ Wireless Solutions business.

The Germany-based company makes chips for Apple’s iPhone and other smartphones, giving Intel a way to take advantage of that growing market.

The deal “strengthens the second pillar of our computing strategy — Internet connectivity — and enables us to offer a portfolio of products that covers the full range of wireless options from Wi-Fi and 3G to WiMAX and LTE,” Intel CEO Paul Otellini said in a statement this morning. “As more devices compute and connect to the Internet, we are committed to positioning Intel to take advantage of the growth potential in every computing segment, from laptops to handhelds and beyond.”

Separately, in Herat Province in western Afghanistan, police found the bullet-riddled bodies of five missing campaign workers for a female candidate in next month’s parliamentary elections, while another candidate for parliament was shot to death, Afghan officials said Sunday.

The American servicemen were killed in five separate incidents, according to statements from the International Security Assistance Force. On Sunday, an American soldier was killed by an improvised explosive device in southern Afghanistan, while another died as a result of an insurgent attack in southern Afghanistan, the NATO force said.

7 US troops killed in latest Afghanistan fighting

Seven U.S. troops have died in weekend attacks in Afghanistan’s embattled southern and eastern regions, while officials found the bodies Sunday of five kidnapped campaign aides working for a female candidate in the western province of Herat.

Two servicemen died in bombings Sunday in southern Afghanistan, while two others were killed in a bomb attack in the south on Saturday and three in fighting in the east the same day, NATO said. Their identities and other details were being withheld until relatives could be notified.

The latest deaths bring to 42 the number of American forces who have died this month in Afghanistan after July’s high of 66. A total of 62 international forces have died in the country this month, including seven British troops.

Fighting is intensifying with the addition of 30,000 U.S. troops to bring the total number of international forces in Afghanistan to 120,000 — 100,000 of them American. Most of those new troops have been assigned to the southern insurgent strongholds of Helmand and Kandahar provinces where major battles are fought almost daily as part of a gathering drive to push out the Taliban.
