New Amazon Kindle 3 stands out against its earlier siblings
Amazon’s latest Kindle has caught everyone’s attention in the e-reader market.

Seeing the possibility of Kindle being overtaken by Apple iPad in the market, Amazon’s CEO Jeff Bezo has slashed the price to make it a better and more competitive e-reader in the market, although iPad is much more than an e-reader.
There are many improvements in the latest Kindle version compared to the second generation e-reader. The new generation of e-reader known as Kindle 3 has smaller body that is 7.5” x4.8”x0.34” compared to Kindle 1 and Kindle 2 at 8”x5.3”x0.34” dimension, almost 21 percent smaller but retains the same 6-inch display. But it is much smaller than Kindle DX, which has 9.7-inch diagonal display with 10.4″ x 7.2″ x 0.38″ dimension.
And the latest Kindle weighs 8.5 ounces for Kindle Wi-Fi version and 8.7 ounces for Kindle 3G+Wi-Fi version (that is weighing less than a paperback according to Amazon) compared to 10.2 ounces of Kindle 1 and Kindle 2, which is 15 percent lighter than the previous versions. The Kindle DX version, anyway, weighs 18.9 ounces.
Amazon Kindle Features Hint at Future Direction
Amazon released its third-generation Kindle July 28, and the device’s “experimental features,” including a Web browser, hint at its possible future directions.
Even before Amazon.com announced its third-generation Kindle July 28, speculation abounded about what new features the online retailer would add to the device, in order to better compete against the likes of Barnes & Noble’s Nook and the Apple iPad.
On the furthest edge of that speculation, some suggested that Amazon would introduce multi-touch capabilities, or even a color screen. But the unveiled Kindle demonstrates Amazon’s continued focus on the basic e-reading experience: the screen has 50 percent better contrast, the body is smaller and lighter, the storage capacity has doubled—and new bells-and-whistles have been kept to a minimum.
Android leader Motorola still well behind Apple’s iPhone
Motorola reported a phenomenal 600 percent leap in earnings this quarter, but is still behind Apple in mobile units sold and is far behind in smartphone sales, leaving Apple the top US phone vendor by units for the second quarter in a row.
Motorola has greatly increased is profits due to a its push with Verizon Wireless in selling the Android-based Droid, also marketed as the Motorola Milestone. The latest model, Droid X, is currently the model being held up against iPhone 4.
Motorola’s quarterly sales of 8.3 million phones is still behind Apple’s 8.4 million units in the second calendar quarter of 2010, which ended in June. However, only 2.7 million of Motorola’s sales were smartphones, meaning Apple sold more than three times as many smartphones as the leading Android maker.
